The first inspection to reveal bee activity was on Wednesday, March 1. It was not encouraging. The clear tube was filled to the point of blockage with dead bees where it made its turn to go into the box. In addition, the bees still kicking seemed to be having a hard time with the slope of the tube and were struggling when trying to return to the colony after descending into the tube. My initial assumption is that the dead bees were caught out being unable to return to the colony.
Some emergency adjustments were made to raise the box so that the tube runs mostly level.
